Preparation

Participants are divided into three groups and given a task to complete together while facing different communication restrictions:

  • See No Evil: Can see but cannot speak or hear (use earplugs or noise-canceling headphones if safe).
  • Hear No Evil: Can hear but cannot see or speak (use a blindfold).
  • Speak No Evil: Can speak but cannot see or hear (use a blindfold and earplugs/headphones).

Clearly explain the task they need to complete together (e.g., building a tower, replicating a pattern) to encourage problem-solving and teamwork despite the communication challenges.

Materials needed

  • Blocks or natural objects (e.g., sticks and stones) for building
  • Blindfolds (or scarves)
  • Space markers (e.g., cones, chalk, or other) to define team areas

Activity (30 minutes)

Step 1: Task Execution (20 minutes)

  • Each group works on completing their task while following the constraints of their assigned roles.
  • Supervise to ensure safety and provide encouragement, but do not intervene unless necessary.

Step 2: Observation and Reflection (10 minutes)

  • If time permits, rotate roles within the groups and repeat the task so everyone experiences different challenges.
  • Encourage participants to reflect on how each role contributes to the group’s success.

Debrief and reflection (15 minutes)

Gather all participants in a circle for a group discussion. Use guiding questions such as:

  • What emotions did you feel while performing your role?
  • How did your team overcome communication challenges?
  • What did you learn about trust and collaboration?
  • How can these lessons apply to real-life situations (e.g., school projects, friendships)?

Encourage personal and group reflection:

  • Share examples of when empathy and patience helped during the activity.
  • Discuss how nonverbal communication played a role in problem-solving.
